The rapid induction method of hypnosis or not?

Recently I was asked if I use the rapid induction method of hypnosis.

The answer to the question is “no”, I do not use the rapid induction method, except the whole story is that I do not do any kind of formal induction.

For the beginning of the actual hypnosis part of my sessions, I use a guided visualization and breathing exercise to show you how to train your mind and body to return to this relaxed state whenever you choose.

Before the actual hypnosis part of our session, I work with clients in an active trance state, engaged in guided imagery, where the client is accessing Alpha and Theta brain wave states AND is fully awake and aware.

By the time we get to the actual hypnosis part of the session, my clients have already been in and out of different levels of trance several times, so I do not spend any time worrying about whether you are in trance or not.

Hypnosis has many levels that range from light to deep. Depth is just a metaphor used when speaking about hypnosis, as in the suggestion to go "deeper and deeper" into hypnosis. Hypnotic states are part of a continuum of regular consciousness, so you may reach many different hypnotic states during your session.

Hypnosis may not feel any different than your normal waking state of awareness.

During hypnosis, your conscious mind may remain focused on my words or it may drift off so you do not track what I am saying.

In my work, I tell my clients that it doesn’t matter what your conscious mind is doing during hypnosis, because your unconscious will be listening to everything I say and you can trust that you will go to the level of trance that is appropriate for you.

Robin Shapiro talks about the movie "The King's Speech"

From Robin Shapiro
Trauma & Attachment Therapy

"Some of the best therapy I've seen on screen is in a great new movie, The King's Speech.

Geoffrey Rush plays Lionel Logue, an Australian speech therapist who tackles the debilitating anxiety-driven stammer of Colin Firth's, "Bertie", who become the king of England on the eve of World War II.

The film shows the stifling lives and roles of the Royals, and the intense pressure on them from their subjects, the Anglican Church, their governments, and each other. It shows how a therapist to the King has to tear down the class barriers in order to make a strong, attached therapeutic relationship. Logue creates the frame be insisting that "Bertie" come to his office ("My castle, my rules."), be on time, and be addressed by his family name, rather than "Your Royal Highness". He sits close, and mixes standard speech therapy with elements of somatic and expressive therapies (some of which are riotously funny) and holds the therapeutic relationship above all. He watches his client carefully, and crafts his client-centered therapy and the environment in which the King must give his speeches to his client's needs.

Logue leads his client to uncover the childhood traumas that precipitated the stammer, and the family dynamics that kept it going. And he uses brilliant and funny strategic therapy to hook his recalcitrant client into therapy, and keep him there.

Helena Bonham Carter plays Bertie's supportive wife, Elizabeth, and is excellent, as usual. Derek Jacobi is the Archbishop of Canterbury, with whom Bertie finally shows his adult and kingly differentiation. Michael Gambon plays King George, Bertie's father, as a well-meaning, impatient, worst father a stammerer could have. (It's strange to see Dumbledore be jerk.) Guy Pearce plays Edward, Bertie's brother who abdicated the throne for a woman Mrs. Simpson (Eve Best).

I knew a lot of the history, and I painlessly learned more of the particulars in this wonderful movie. The King's Speech is suspenseful, beautifully acted, funny, sad, and hopeful. I hope you see it, too."

Using the "parts" technique to support recovery

From Robin Shapiro's Trauma & Attachment Therapy Blog

"Is addiction a form of dissociation?"

"When addicts think of their drug or behavior of choice, they begin to enjoy their endogenous (internal) opiates. When they engage in their drug or behavior it gives them an even better high. The neural pathways to the repetitive addictive behavior become wide and strong, until they become ego states. When people in recovery talk about "my addict", they refer to this strong ego state. Integrate the ego state and help heal the addiction.

So how does this work? Have clients bring up the last time they were frantic to use, or the last time they did use. "Where do you feel that inside? What's the feeling? Float back to the first time you had that feeling. How old is that? What was happening then? Can you bring your adult back to that time/that kid?

What do you need to tell that child? You're with her. You can fly her up to the present time. She's with you all the time, now, and you're with her.

Can you tell her that now, as a competent adult, you can tolerate those enormous feelings? Can you show her how you have learned to soothe yourself without that drug/behavior? How's that kid doing now? (Do whatever it takes to calm her down.) And are you ready to hug her into you now and forever?"

There is usually a frantic little child and often an angry/protective teenage part. Sometimes there are several "parts" involved in different pieces of the addiction. It has worked on several clients."

Sally Reed's Hypnosis Seattle

Does Hypnotherapy work?

Sally Reed, Consulting Hypnotist at Hypnosis Seattle

Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy sessions can help.

Are you looking for a way to solve your problems, focus your mind, and achieve your goals, such as weight loss, eating and exercise issues, stop / quit smoking, reduce anxiety, reverse the effects of stress, improve self esteem, release the fear of public speaking, sleep better, deepen relaxation, enhance relationships, release recurring thoughts and negative self-talk, overcome limitations, improve memory, learning, and test taking, get rid of bad habits, improve  healing, healthy living, make good choices, feel free and clear, be happy?

My goal is to help you solve your problems, achieve your goals, and get the good feelings you want to feel, with more success and less stress.

I am genuinely concerned with helping you get what you want.

My approach.

Of course, I love it when just one session is all it takes to solve your problem completely, and I have had that happen with everything from insomnia to test anxiety.

I always approach each situation as if it can be resolved in one session, but sometimes there are more complex factors involved and it takes more sessions to address what comes up for each individual.

When the challenge is really entrenched, which can happen for a variety of reasons that may be known or unknown, the subconscious seems to be acting like an opposing team stubbornly determined to win.

Hypnosis allows you to enter a wonderful state of relaxation and heightened suggestibility, allowing you to begin focusing your mind on your desires and goals in a way that can powerfully imprint success on your subconscious mind.

The effect snacking on almonds has on weight.

"A study published in the International Journal of Obesity looked at the effect snacking on almonds has on weight.

Researchers divided 65 obese adults into two groups. One group was given a low-calorie diet where 18 percent of the calories came from fat. The other group was given an almond enriched diet. Thirty-nine percent of their calories came from the almond's fat.

Both groups ate an identical number of calories and amount of protein.

After 6 months the group fed the almonds experienced a 62 percent greater reduction in body mass index, a 50 percent greater reduction in waist size, and a 56 percent greater reduction in body fat. Of course these results were measured against the non- almond eating group.

Almonds are loaded with healthy monounsaturated fat. This type of fat absorbs vitamins, keeps LDL levels low, regulates insulin, and reduces inflammation.

And as opposed to the carbohydrates present in snack foods, monounsaturated fat doesn't give you an insulin spike. Your body converts carbohydrates into blood sugar which is then changed into glycogen. This glycogen is stored in your liver and muscles.

But when your liver and muscles have reached maximum storage capacity, any excess is stored as fat. Your blood sugar becomes low and you feel hungry. That's when most of us reach for high-carb snack and junk foods. It becomes a vicious circle.

A study was published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition where participants were pre-diabetic. Researchers had them consume 20 percent of their total calories from almonds.

At the end of the 16-week study period, study participants had a significant improvement in LDL cholesterol levels and measures of insulin sensitivity.

Instead of reaching for snack foods in your favorite vending machine, buy organically grown almonds instead. "
