Obstacles

"If you are new to the world of hypnosis, I want to be the first to congratulate and welcome you to your new adventure.

The realm of the subconscious mind is an amazing one and hypnosis is a safe and marvelous way to explore it. I would love the opportunity to be your personal tour guide as you set upon your journey of self-discovery."

"Remember, obstacles are what we are looking at when we take our eyes off the goal!"

I will, I won't, and I want

"Instead of thinking of willpower as the ability to resist temptation it is actually 3 powers/aspects/sides of will power.
"will" power (remembering future goals) ,
 "won't" power (resist temptation) ,
and "want" power (clear memory of what it is you care about most - put your desires, your energy and attention on what you care about most) ."
The Willpower Instinct:
How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do To Get More of It

In any conflict, the subconscious will always triumph.

"The concept of "willpower" pits the conscious mind against the subconscious mind.

In any conflict, the subconscious will always triumph, therefore the concept of willpower is largely meaningless.

Any notion of overcoming subconscious resistance with conscious will is a myth."

Unfulfilled Wishes

Read more: http://stason.org/TULARC/self-growth/hypnosis/The-Myth-of-Willpower-Continued.html#.Uo_4kdGA2ic#ixzz2lR9THmCR

"We all do things we wish we did not do, and don't do things we wish we would. Our unfulfilled wishes and desires are clearly conscious. What we really do tells us our subconscious position on things.

Self hypnosis and suggestion are the way we go about bringing the subconscious mind into agreement with our conscious plans. It is the way we tune our intrapsychic or bicameral resonance.

To achieve your ends it is in fact essential that you cease thinking in adversarial terms and move toward the concept of harmony, coordination and resonance."

"Will" is bicameral resonance.

Read more: http://stason.org/TULARC/self-growth/hypnosis/The-Myth-of-Willpower-Continued.html#.Uo_4kdGA2ic#ixzz2lR9THmCR

" "Bicameral" simply means there are two governing parts of the mind.

In other words, the conscious part and the unconscious, or subconscious, part.

...To tap into more of the richness of the concept of resonance, and to go further into the complexities of how the two parts of the mind work together, think of two musical instruments, say a horn and a guitar. If a note is played on the horn it will make the guitar strings vibrate the same note and some of its harmonics. That is resonance. The closer the horn's note is to the "key" of the string, the stronger the vibration.

Now consider two related qualities of resonance, consonance and dissonance.

Consonance is a good thing. It sounds good when two notes that are consonant are played simultaneously, and in the same way it is easy for us to do something when there is consonance between the conscious and subconscious parts of the mind. The more consonant they are, the easier it is.

Dissonance is not such a good thing. Two notes that don't go together jangle our nerves; they are not harmonious. Same goes for ideas. If there is conscious-subconscious dissonance about something, it is the subconscious "note" that will come through. In other words, without conscious-subconscious agreement, the only thing that will happen will be what the subconscious wants.

What this theorem says, then, is that will is the product of agreement about a particular idea between the subconscious and conscious parts of the mind.

Everything we do, we do with agreement from the subconscious mind.

To suggest that we will consciously override the subconscious is ridiculous. The subconscious mind is far and away the dominant force and must be reckoned with for any achievement to occur.

Conversely, without subconscious concurrence, you will not be able to do it. Not for very long, anyway.

This position has immense ramifications at every level of human study. It challenges conventional wisdom which is seemingly set in stone. It attracts a lot of controversy.

The Myth of Willpower

Read more: http://stason.org/TULARC/self-growth/hypnosis/The-Myth-of-Willpower-Continued.html#.Uo_4kdGA2ic#ixzz2lQOIKJRW

"So willpower is a mythical conception. It is a quality of mind or personality that just does not exist. It is a phantasm. It is a cruel hoax because it makes those of us who don't seem to have it feel inadequate. Yet adequacy and inadequacy have nothing to do with it."

Self-Control Relies on Glucose as a Limited Energy Source

Conclusion of the research studies:
Willpower Is More Than a Metaphor

"Self-control, as a relatively advanced human
capacity, was probably one of the last to develop and hence may
be one of the first to suffer impairments when resources are inadequate. The present findings suggest that relatively small acts of self-control are sufficient to deplete the available supply of glucose, thereby impairing the control of thought and behavior, at least until the body can retrieve more glucose from its stores or ingest more calories. More generally, the body’s variable ability to mobilize glucose may be an important determinant of people’s capacity to live up to their ideals, pursue their goals, and realize
their virtues."

"Self-control (or self-regulation) is the ability to control or override one’s thoughts, emotions, urges, and behavior. Self-control allows for the flexibility necessary for successful goal attainment, and it greatly facilitates adherence to morals, laws, social norms, and other rules and regulations. As such, it is one of the most important and beneficial processes in the human personality structure.

A burgeoning body of evidence has linked good self-control to a broad range of desirable outcomes, including healthier interpersonal relationships, greater popularity, better mental health, more effective coping skills, reduced aggression, and superior academic performance, as well as less susceptibility to drug and alcohol abuse, criminality, and eating disorders."

Hypnosis for weightloss works well with chinldren and young adults.

Hypnotherapy addresses the reason why your child is overweight and helps affect the way the brain feels about food, exercise, emotional hunger, cravings, beliefs about the body and much more.

Handling this issue must be done in a way that supports your child’s self esteem. What every child needs most is love and support, not criticism from the one place they need to feel the safest…home.

If you are embarrassed about your overweight child’s appearance that is an issue you have that needs to be worked on. Don’t put that on your child. Nothing will damage their self-esteem more quickly than letting them know you are embarrassed by their appearance.

Please remember to NEVER, EVER, EVER single a child out for their weight by saying things like, “we are worried about your weight,” or “should you be eating that?” or anything else that is critical or mean.  Don’t allow anyone to tease or bully them.

Learn about nutrition and healthy eating and more importantly help them build their self-esteem so that they will want to keep their bodies healthy and well nourished. It is safe to assume that all food served at school is unhealthy.  If you want your child to eat a healthy lunch, you have to pack it yourself. When someone in the family is at an unhealthy weight, then the whole family will benefit from eating a healthier diet and getting more exercise, so make any changes for the whole family.

Your children need to know you love them no matter what, and that you want them to be healthy and happy.

Hypnosis works so well with children because they have a greater responsiveness to suggestion. Most children only need 3-4 sessions, with improvement beginning from the very first session. Children’s session are tailored to their individual attention spans and usually last less than an hour.

As in any intervention with children, it is important for parents to be present and informed. During sessions the parent is either relaxing nearby in the background or waiting outside the hypnosis office. Parents are encouraged to provide support and reinforcement for the child in between sessions.

What hypnosis is used for in 30 seconds or less

"People are always asking me, what can hypnosis be used for? ...

Hypnosis is used to get rid of what you don’t like, to get more of what you do like, and to find out more about what makes you tick.
That’s it in a nutshell.

If I’m losing weight, I’m getting rid of something I don’t like. The same is true if I stop smoking or get rid of feelings of grief or anger. This is the category that is most associated with hypnosis.

On the other side of the coin, when I get a boost of self-confidence or self-esteem, I’m getting more of something I do want.

The same thing is true when I use hypnosis to become better at sports. All of these are examples of hypnotic uses that fall into the “I want more” category.

If you want to think of it this way, the “I want more” category is the self-improvement category.

The last phrase ... , “and to find out more about you”, represents the newest use of hypnosis.

Hypnotists are now working with clients to help them gain a better understanding of who they really
are and what their purpose in life is. In my opinion, it’s the most fascinating area of hypnosis today."

Ryan Howes "The Ten Coolest Therapy Interventions"

From Psychology Today: Here to Help :
Ryan Howes's The Ten Coolest Therapy Interventions

"This series is for entertainment and basic educational purposes only. My mission is to demystify elements of therapy so it becomes more accessible to the general public."

"Here are the Ten Coolest Therapy Inventions (10CTI). Click through to each full post and interview:
10. The Miracle Question
"Suppose tonight, while you slept, a miracle occurred. When you awake tomorrow, what would be some of the things you would notice that would tell you life had suddenly gotten better?"
"What: One simple question that moves clients toward a solution-focused outcome.
Why cool? Immediately shifts the brain toward positive thinking.
Guest: Linda Metcalf, author and Solution-Focused Therapy expert."
9.   The Empty Chair
"The client imagined someone (or himself, herself, or parts of him or herself) in it, and spoke, gestured, or otherwise communicated to the "empty chair," which was now not so empty. The client then sat in the chair, continuing the conversation, this time reversing roles."
"What: Telling off your demanding boss, even if the chair opposite you is empty.
Why cool? Enabled millions of people to practice expressing how they really feel.
Guest: Dan Bloom, President of the Association for the Advancement of Gestalt Therapy."
8.   Paradoxical Interventions
"The idea is that, if a symptom is involuntary, having it voluntarily means the behavior can be controlled and is no longer a symptom."
"What: By prescribing the very symptom you want to eliminate, somehow you gain power and control.
Why cool? Insight and progress sneak through the back door.
Guest: Cloe Madanes, pioneer of Strategic Family Therapy."
7.   Voice Dialogue
"Each of us "contains multitudes". We are made up of many selves, identifying with some and rejecting others. This over-identification with some selves and the loss of wholeness that comes from the rejection of others, can create imbalances and blind spots. This work is about embracing all the selves."
"What: A summit meeting between conflicted parts of self.
Why cool? Helps clients understand how complex they are and work toward integration.
Guest: Hal and Sidra Stone, founders of the Psychology of the Selves."
6.   The Hunger Illusion
"The process is simple: 1) identify the moment you tend to act automatically, 2) don't, and 3) see what thoughts and feelings come up."
"What: Stop yourself before acting on habit and see what comes up.
Why cool? Gives powerful insight into the unconscious with no therapist required!
Guest: George Weinberg, venerable psychologist and Hunger Illusion creator."
5.   Head-On Collision
"When people push through the resistance and experience true, intense emotion about the past and present, psychological symptoms diminish and interpersonal relationships improve."
"What: Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy ( ISTDP ) therapists are essentially resistance exterminators who eliminate harmful defenses.
Why cool? It's quick, it's bold, it's hardcore, it's punk rock.
Guest: Allan Abbas, leading researcher in ISTDP."
4.   Sandplay
"The remarkable feature of sandplay is that, as the client fashions and moves the figures in the trays, his or her psyche concurrently moves into new and healthier configurations. This takes place with no intermediary. Instead it is a direct link of psyche, or brain patterns to three dimensional figures that "write" and "re-write" its configuration to healthier, fuller functioning."
"What: Using your hands, sand and plastic figures to communicate your internal world.
Why cool? The psyche becomes a visible, tangible 3-D environment.
Guest: Barbara Turner, prominent author and Sandplay therapist."
3.   Primal Therapy
"The aim of Primal Therapy is to restore the patients access to their repressed feelings and therefore free them from the consequences of repression. It is a process that the patients can go on doing by themselves once they have "access" to the buried feelings."
"Each time they let themselves "feel" they reconnect themselves to the origin of the repression and have numerous insights. They also feel better that they knew was possible because they take the misery out of their systems."
"What: Expressing emotions locked away from consciousness.
Why cool? It confronts the deepest wounds to achieve profound results. And John Lennon did it.
Guest: Arthur Janov, founder of Primal Therapy."
2.   Virtual Reality
"We are at the start of a revolution in clinical research and care, in large part due to the game-changing impact that VR and other related digital technologies will have, as we charge ahead into the 21st Century!"
"What: Using a computer-generated environment to help soldiers and others work through emotional trauma.
Why cool? Just re-read that last sentence.
Guest: Cyber-psychology's bad boy, Skip Rizzo."
1.   Transference Interpretation
"The interpretation of the transference situation is designed to make something conscious that has been unconscious."
"This co-created epiphany helps thoughts, feelings and behaviors suddenly make sense and seem manageable."
"A transference interpretation links three sides of a triangle. One side is the patient's transference to the therapist; a second side is the patient's experiences with current relationships outside of therapy; the third side is the patient's past relationships with parents and others."
"What: Ties together the past, the present and the therapy in one well-crafted statement.
Why cool? Patience, understanding and insight collide in one life-changing sentence.
Guest: Popular author and psychoanalyst Glen O. Gabbard. "

And one final post to summarize, list the honorable mentions and wrap up."

"Honorable Mentions
  • EMDR - Treating thousands of cases of PTSD, one eyeball at a time.
  • Equine Therapy - When the couch becomes a saddle for treating eating disorders, mood disorders, autism, even gang violence.
